Our Humble Beginnings
Who would have thought that St. James Hospital Inc., the first private hospital in Sta. Rosa City and one of the biggest healthcare facilities in Laguna, was founded by a then young and newly graduated doctor from the barrio? St. James Hospital, Inc. is a testament of success stories that emanated from optimism, hardwork, and perseverance. As the hospital is not situated along the national highway, nobody believed that it would survive. But Dr. Jose P. Santiago, Jr. had a vision—a vision that was so vivid it kept the man on track. And with the grace of God, Dr. Santiago, together with the people who helped him realize his dream, started to reap the fruits of their hard work.
As St. James Hospital traces its roots from the two-storey, 110-square-meter Santiago Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center, it is no doubt that the hospital started from very humble beginnings. “I remember during our early days, we had to do tasks beyond our expected workload since this hospital really started small. I, for instance, also served as a nursing assistant and a cashier of the hospital,” said Ms. Nerissa Santiago, St. James Hospital’s Pharmacy and Ancillary Head and one of the two remaining pioneer staff of the hospital. “You wouldn’t believe but in our first years, Dr. Santiago was actually receiving patients for admission on top of his tasks as one of the hospital’s physicians, as hospital administrator, and as the one-man marketing team of the Santiago Medical Clinic,” added Ms. Santiago.
Meanwhile, the hospital’s pioneer staff, consultants, and its management, albeit in small circle, were able to establish a bond that made them a family. This sense of family became one of the advantages of St. James Hospital that eventually translated to the culture of service that Dr. Santiago wanted to render to the patients. During the old days, the hospital would hold its holiday parties and events at the small lobby of the Santiago Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center, which served as the receiving area on regular days. This small lobby witnessed the camaraderie among the hospital’s employees, because it was here where they would exchange their friendly banter and the occasional chorus of laughter to further give them life while working in a place they considered their second home. The tried-and-tested convivial organizational culture that was established in St. James Hospital kept many of the pioneer staff and doctors glued to their job at the hospital. Indeed, they are the valuable assets and real gems of the hospital. Because of their hardwork and dedication, St. James Hospital had not been remiss in rewarding their services with benefits and incentives.
Rebranding & Expansion
With the misconception from the people, especially from the larger markets such as the industrial companies and the Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) that the Santiago Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center was not a fully operational hospital, it was incorporated and renamed as St. James Hospital, Inc. in 1993. Shortly after the hospital’s rebranding, people began to flock to the hospital to avail its medical and healthcare services. Likewise, industrial and multinational companies within the area approached the hospital to become the healthcare and health examination provider of their employees, while HMOs themselves applied for the hospital’s accreditation of their packages. Seeing the demand for additional rooms, facilities, and services, the management of the St. James Hospital, Inc. initiated a series of expansions over the years. The hospital also hired additional healthcare and administrative staff for more efficient services. Recognizing the hospital’s commitment to give comprehensive healthcare services at the highest standards, the Department of Health elevated the status of St. James Hospital, Inc. from a secondary level general hospital to a tertiary (second-level referral) general hospital in 2003.
First expansion of the hospital. The first wave of expansion at St. James Hospital started in 1996. From its original building, the hospital was renovated and expanded to where the billing section is currently located. The hospital also acquired additional medical equipment during this period of expansion which included the installation of an ultrasound machine. At that time, it was rare to acquire an ultrasound machine for a provincial private hospital. Meanwhile, the current Pharmacy area used to be occupied by the Laboratory and Radiology Departments, while the hospital’s Pharmacy was previously located at the current emergency room.
State of the Art Facilities
For 25 years, the St. James Hospital Inc. has been the standard of healthcare innovation in Sta. Rosa and its neighboring cities. Aside from its quality healthcare services, the hospital has been leading in terms of acquisition of state-of-the-art facilities for faster and more efficient healthcare services to its patients. For a long time, St. James Hospital Inc. was the only hospital in Laguna with a Computerized Axial Tomography (CT) Scan machine, which was acquired in 2001. On its 25th anniversary, the hospital has continued to modernize its core diagnostic units, particularly its radiological and laboratory services, by installing a laboratory equipment (Vitros 5600) that is designed to work efficiently even under minimal operator intervention, and which produces faster and higher quality laboratory results albeit increased demands; and a new and more efficient Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine (1.5 TESLA-Supercon) that has advanced imaging techniques and more detailed scanning sequences.
On its 25th year, the St. James Hospital continues to lead in healthcare innovation by improving further its quality of services; by capitalizing on its most valuable assets - the hospital’s doctors and employees, through incentives and continuous professional development programs; and by investing heavily in state-of-the-art facilities and modern technologies for faster and more efficient results and transactions. The hospital also brought its services to the community by establishing the St. James community Clinic in Brgy. San Isidro, Cabuyao City, Laguna. To grace its 25th Anniversary, the hospital inaugurated its first satellite industrial clinic, the St. James Hospital Inc. LISP Industrial Clinic and Diagnostic Center at the Light Industry and Science Park in Brgy. Diezmo, Cabuyao City, Laguna.
